Weapons

For the personal Bojutsu-Training is just a small selection of weapons needed:

  • Lightweight Rattan-Bo for practice spins, working on a Box Stand
  • 6' tapered red oak Rokushaku-Bō for traditional technique training (Kihon).
  • Yonshakubo for indoor training with a low ceiling or less space.
  • Padded Bo for safety Sparring (Kumimbo).

The Rokushaku-Bō - 六尺棒

Rokushaku-Bō– 六尺棒 (Japanese) translated

Roku (six) Shaku (one foot) Bō (stick, staff).

The Rokushakubo also called Bō 棒 or just staff.

In Okinawa's local areas the traditional name for the Bō is Kun or Kon.

Sometimes people say Bo-Staff - This is wrong because it is like as you would say staff-staff, stick-stick or whatever.

Traditionally, it is a 6 foot (182 cm) long and about 0,8-1 inch (2.5 to 3 cm) diameter stick made of hardwood (mostly red or white oak, but more rarely also made of plastic or metal); whereby for today's training one says that the size should be adapted to the exerciser. The Bō should be two hands longer than the exerciser.
